      Audiolab 8000CDE

      Review summary: Audiolab has been around for a while and can claim a prestigious hi-fi past, especially during the eighties and nineties. Its position faltered slightly following company restructuring but recent designs have been making a stirring comeback.

      Pros: Competitive price ; build quality ; detailed and dynamic performance

      Cons: Outdated remote ; lacks cohesive timing

      Audiolab 8000CD

      Review summary: Just in case you've been out of the hi-fi scene for a few years and missed it, the story with Audiolab is that it was a very successful amplifier brand, taken over and turned into TAG McLaren Audio, which, sadly, failed and sank

      Pros: Nicely built and smart, Finely judged tonal balance

      Cons: Detail a little subdued at this price

      Verdict: A good - rather than great - performer, but possessed of its own charm nonetheless
