      Hitachi DZ-HS300E

      Review summary: Allowing for recording direct to mini DVDs or to an internal hard disk, the Hitachi DZ-HS300E has much to offer the hobbyist videographer.

      Pros: Built-in hard disk drive, responsive 25x optical zoom, effective image stabilisation, clear flip-out widescreen LCD

      Cons: Fiddly transport controls, no external mic socket, no accessory shoe, no built-in flash, recording to optical media is time-consuming, cannot import directly into iMovie, only 0.4mp stills

      Verdict: The DZ-HS300E is inexpensive and offers the convenience of HD storage. It's easy enough to use, but the recording format is not one that iMovie can import. But if you don't mind having to convert footage before editing, this is a low-cost route into ...

      Review summary: Hitachi's DZ-HS300E is a budget hybrid HDD/DVD-based camcorder, ideal if you want the stability of hard drive recording with the easy playback and distribution of a DVD. It's not a bad performer, but the image quality is far from perfect

      Pros: One-touch dubbing from hard drive to DVD ; supports a wide variety of DVD formats

      Cons: Poor video and photo quality ; easy to accidentally turn power off and switch modes

      Verdict: Hitachi had a good idea -- put both a hard disk drive and a DVD in a camcorder -- but implements it poorly in the DZ-HS300E
