      Marantz DV7001

      Review summary: Squeeze more out of your DVDs with Marantz's hulk of a player. It'll bootcamp those discs to 1080p. Hup!

      Pros: High quality sound and vision. Allows you to go HD without choosing between Blu-ray and HD-DVD. No buying new copies of all your DVDs

      Cons: More expensive than some HD players. Bulky. And it's not true HD, no matter how good the upscaling

      Pros: Excellent CD, SACD, and DVD-A playback ; Scaling up to 1080p

      Cons: Rudimentary GUI ; HDMI 1.1 (Not 1.3)

      Review summary: The DV7001 is a medium-priced high-spec straight DVD player - but note the word 'straight', which in this case applies specifically to the video subsection. Marantz has yet to commit irrevocably to either Blu-ray or HD DVD

      Pros: An accomplished all-rounder, Improved audio quality

      Cons: Film soundtracks can sound lightweight

      Verdict: An excellent and affordable disc player that will cope with almost anything round, silver and digitally encoded
