Review: Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-ray disc player

      By Ian Calcutt

Review summary: Samsung's first with a Blu-ray player in the UK. So has the rush been worth it..?

Pros: : This smart looking machine delivers a very good Blu-ray picture and upscales standard DVDs

Cons: A pricey player, especially compared to its rival HD DVD ; it also lacks a network connection and the best outputs for high-end audio formats

      Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-ray player

      By Stuart Miles

Review summary: - Samsung has managed to be the first in the UK to launch its Blu-ray player capable of playing the latest high definition discs to give you vastly improved picture quality.

Pros: Picture quality, styling, memory card reader, playback standard DVDs

Cons: Price, can't playback xD memory cards

Verdict: While the BD-P1000 offers a fantastic picture quality, the four-digit price tag is likely to put anyone who isn't expecting a big city bonus to wait a little longer

Review summary: The remote isn't the HD-XA1's flashy auto-illuminated brick, which is good, but it's not backlit, which is bad. So, on a functionality basis, the Samsung is a whole level better than the Toshiba, but who cares about how it is to use.

      Samsung BD-P1000

Review summary: We may have to call this one a do-over: Samsung dropped the ball on the launch of the first Blu-ray player. Samsung engineers determined that the noise-reduction circuit in the player's Genesis scaler chip was enabled, causing the picture to soften ...
