      Review summary: To call the Sony BDP-S550 a budget Blu-ray player would be doing it a disservice to its myriad features, but what else do you call a Blu-ray player that costs around £250?

      Pros: Awesome picture quality, whether upscaling or direct from Blu-ray disc

      Cons: The remote controlisn't exactly in keeping with the aesthetics

      Verdict: The Sony BDP-S550 is a pretty formidable Blu-ray player at a pretty formidable price point. Picture quality's not half bad either!

      Pros: Excellent Blu-ray image quality, 7.1-channel analog output, BD-Live ready

      Cons: USB port can't be used for playing media, DVD upscaling makes edges fuzzy

      Verdict: The Sony BDP-S550 is a good product but its relatively high cost means that unless you need the 7.1-channel analog output the competition offers better value.

      Cons: PlayStation 3 may still offer a better value for some buyers, Competing players offer more features or lower prices
