      Sony RDR-HXD860

Review summary: Sony takes Freeview to the next level with a HDD DVD recorder that can automatically records all of the programmes in a series at the push of a button. It's not quite Sky, but it's getting there

Pros: Series Recording, Excellent picture quality

Cons: Only one digital tuner and no analogue

Verdict: It's certainly not perfect but it's a step in the right direction for Sony

      Sony RDR-HXD860

Review summary: There has often been a trade off in features for the price when itcomes to recording digital TV. You can opt for subscription-based recorders such as Sky or TV Drive with sophisticated features but ongoing costs

Pros: Digital TV, HDMI output, Series Recording feature, Good picture quality

Cons: Single Freeview tuner, Inflexible with some disc formats

Verdict: One of the first HD/DVD combis to include next-generation Freeview recording, but has some quirks

    Sony RDR-HXD860 By Anonymous (18/06/2007)
    • Pros: Good picture, good sound, good EPG
    • Cons: Very loud on-going fan, never-off HD

Sony have a real Jekyll&Hyde performer here.
The picture quality and sound are both generally good, and the EPG is very good compared to others I've experienced.
However it has some unmissable faults.

Good equipment marred by noisy fan.

    Sony RDR-HXD860 By Anonymous (02/01/2007)
    • Pros: Excellent EPG, versitile recording.
    • Cons: Noisy fan

Having never had an HD recorder before I plumped for this one following some good salesmanship in the shop. Now I am no Hi_Fi geek, am not looking for pixel perfect pictures and sound. This is for general family use.
