      Panasonic SC-HT545W

      Review summary: The system certainly looks attractive, especially without any wires clogging things up

      Pros: Excellent component video quality, Responsive audio performance

      Cons: Limited connectivity

      Verdict: The absence of some key connections is a disappointment, particularly HDMI, but from a performance perspective the SC-HT545W is impressive for the money and the wireless rears are a cable-cutting revelation

      Review summary: The DD-8 is the flagship network media system from JVC's new Sophisti systems range. Essentially, it's a virtual surround sound system usingfront speakers plus a centre and a subwoofer to create a 5.1 surround sound experience

      Pros: Good picture connections, Floorstanding speakers deliver quality sound

      Cons: Gimmicky surround modes and effects, Only compatible with Windows XP, Some picture noise

      Verdict: Good sound and video performance, and brings PC formats into the mix nicely
