Sony NW-E003 (1GB): longer lasting Walkman

      By Chris Stevens

Pros: Long battery life ; sleek looks ; rugged build

Cons: SonicStage software (though we felt substantially less suicidal over it than we have before)

Verdict: It's been a while since an MP3 (or rather, ATRAC) player impressed us this much. Sony has nailed the small-form player and delivered everything you could hope for. Aside from the typically pointless SonicStage software, this is a master stroke

      Sony - NW-E003

Review summary: Sony's NW-E003 music player uses a simple USB memory key design, where you pop off the end cover and plug it into your PC or notebook to charge the Li-Ion battery and fill the player with ...

Verdict: Sony has come up with a small, light and stylish player that has a superb battery life, but in 1GB form it's a fairly expensive player and the process of converting music files to ATRAC format is so tedious that it is beyond a joke.

      By Christian Harris

Review summary: Some time ago Apple made a bold move by releasing an entry-level player, the iPod Shuffle. This managed to creep in at an acceptable price point by being a small memory device with no screen or fancy extras. But times have moved on ...

Pros: Tiny ; awesome battery life ; snazzy OLED display ; sounds great ; easy to use

Cons: Doesn't support DRM or ACC ; FM tuner is extra ; can't drag and drop music

Verdict: Compact & lightweight with outstanding battery life, this is the sub-£100 player to own

      By Marc Delehanty

Review summary: The NW-E003 is Sony's latest attempt to corner the ultra-portable mp3 player market. Despite resembling a standard USB flash drive, this player...

Pros: Stylish ; lightweight ; excellent battery life

Cons: FM radio an extra ; Sony's Atrac system

Verdict: Excellent battery life, but Sony's insistence on using its Atrac DRM holds it back
