Plug and Go

By Boby Thomas (31/10/2006)
  • Pros: User friendly, wider touch screen, speed camera warnings
  • Cons: In-car charging unreliable

I bought this Tom Tom 510 after reading a lot of reviews of the GPS. For some reason I wanted just the Tom Tom rather than any other system (Probably because my friends had tom toms...but its worth while looking at other systems too before you buy this not so cheap piece of equipment). It is exactly as it says...plug and go. The interface is extremely user friendly. No funny business of set up, installation etc. The maps are upto-date but sometimes it tries to take you on a different path when you know there is a easier or shorter way. Usually it takes you the shortest and quickest way possible unless you make a different turn to what it says. I had a problem with it when I initially started. After a day of turning it on it just went dead and would not come on no matter what I did. Tried pressing the power button several times but it just would not start. I checked the extensive database of questions online at their website and found that you had to press the reset button if this happened. It lies in different places on different ones. It solved the problem and never happened again...so far that is. The other major problem is that the car charger plugs in a funny way and sometimes does not charge properly...probably when the car bumps and the connection becomes loose. I make sure that the tom tom is fully charged before I make any journey and check the charging light on and off and the battery indicator too. I don’t think Tom Tom are going to do anything about this and its just something that people who buy this product need to be aware of…..that the charging in the car is unreliable. There are a lot of reviews on the internet regarding this problem but I am yet to come across some way of sorting this out once and for all. Other than these 2 problems I have not come across anything else and the 510 is a beautiful piece of equipment.
